Welcome to Early Years

Reception is a very exciting year in which children will be challenged to develop their skills across all areas of learning.

Children are encouraged to access a range of activities within the classroom and in the outdoor area. Each class has several areas including role play, maths, creative, investigation, reading corner and computers.

Children engage in some whole class activities as the year progresses including:

  • a weekly session in the school computer suite
  • a weekly PE session in the school hall (please see note in glossary about PE)
  • a  weekly music session

Children’s learning experiences are delivered through PLODs (Possible Lines Of Direction). This is a form of planning where we observe children to take note of their interests and where they are engaged in purposeful play. We believe that children learn effectively when they are interested and motivated and able to initiate activities. We plan carefully using PLODs.

We recognise the vital role parents play in their children’s education and we look forward to working together throughout the course of the year. If you need to speak to your child’s teacher we are available most days after school.

Reading Volunteers

In order to optimise reading in Reception, the Reception team are looking for parent volunteers who can commit to listening to children read for 1 hr or more once or twice a week. Please inform your child’s class teacher if you are able to help or interested in making a short-term commitment.
